Marvin Jouno is a french composer-singer-songwriter born in Saint Brieuc in the mid 80's. Established in Paris for more than 10 years, he grew up in Paris' suburbs.
After studies of directing and photography, he became a set designer for the cinema.
2010 : Picture A Song
He was looking for a purpose to the pictures and songs that he always kept in external hard drives. Picture A Song was born as a mix of photos gleaned over the years and travels but also included 7 songs. The website no longer exists because he wanted to split these two activities for greater clarity.
2010 : Eclipse
His first 7 song EP. The same songs that in Picture A Song but finalized. He was making his first steps in computer assisted music, composing, singing… because at the beginning he was sort of "humming", as he says. Marvin Jouno qualifies this first EP as mock-up, a simple draft.
Two years passed and transformed the lonely black of the Eclipse into a collective white, the Ivoire's one.
2013 : L'Ivoire
His second 4 song EP. The real starting point. He had more experience, control… That moment was also marking the beginning of a collaboration with Angelo Foley for the realization of the project.
Ivory like a precious material, a cabinet of curiosities' accessory, the flip side of the Eclipse, the keys of the piano on which the 4 songs have been composed. And finally, Ivory like invitation to read the lyrics. What you hear is not always what you read.
The 4 songs of L'Ivoire fall in an autobiographic, melancholic and literary pop music. French language as an obvious fact.
Produced by Angelo Foley with an actual indie pop oscillating between Arcade Fire, Likke Li, Chilly Gonzales, Grizzly Bear…as a sound reference. The premise being to never end up with variety, to avoid the lyrics' trap to propose a French pop written in French.
2015 : Ouverture
His first real 4 songs EP. The idea ? Reconciling indie pop and French language to propose a French version of pop/a pop dubbed into French.
Today, he's revealing himself, he's picking elements from his own life and his family one. Concerning the form of his songs, he likes kneading, stretching, triturating the French language that he considers as elastic and endless.
Beyond the rhymes, he likes the rhythm brought by assonances, he tries to establish a sort of written dyslexia, to play with pronunciation mistakes.
He is also often compared to renowned artists like Benjamin Biolay or Alain Bashung.
2016 : Intérieur Nuit
Intérieur Nuit is a first album that you read like a story, out loud, that you listen and watch by the window. It is an elopement, a narrow escape through numbed landscapes relighted by songs. It is the inner travel of a 31 year old nostalgic hero who walks masked. Marvin Jouno looks at himself into the director Andreï Tarkovski's blurred mirror, drinks Russian literature, writes real love letters, releases his ghosts. He puts a sound setting, the nocturnal piano molts to let some space to lo-fi (low fidelity) synthetic textures and massive rhythms that drags us into London's streets. Marvin Jouno takes pop music with gloves woven in a noble and sensitive material, genuine lyrics, hand carved; a carnal and humble tone serving this French language that he adores.
For this first album release "Intérieur Nuit", Marvin Jouno chose to image the eleven songs of it through an original medium-length film blending fiction, documentary and onirism.
